Just left a house party and I still want my dancing fix. Melly is at the Grand Opening of a new nightclub where the old Mandarin Club once stood. So here we go!

Satisfaction Saturdays @ Tao Nightclub

Assessment Time: 2:30am – 4:00am
Website: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=288588253950
Address: 396 Pitt St, CNR Goulburn St (Old Mandarin Club)
Dress Code / Door Policy: Advertised as “dress to impress”, but seemingly more relaxed about it at the door. Every guy inside though had a collared shirt, and the girls were all in dresses.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: Free for ladies before 11, $10 on birthday guestlist before midnight. $20 for all others.
Guestlist: See facebook page for details
Inside: Beneath the now Mr B’s Hotel, Tao Bar/Nightclub is a small area split into even smaller areas – A carpeted area where most dancing occurs. It holds 50-80 people. There are two lounge areas on either side of the dancefloor. A DJ is along the wall. The wooden floor area is the general ‘lets stand around and chat each other up’ area with bar and some tables and stools. This particular area has a green and red spotted light thing dotting the area. It’s trippy.
Cloak Room: $5 per item.
Bar: $19 for 2 carlton draughts and a pure blonde. $16 jugs of beer before midnight
DJs: Xcentrik, R*One, Normz, Edo, Day-Day
Music: RnB most of the night, with the occasional commercial house song thrown in. If you have never been to an RnB asian club.. usually the RNB songs each get about 30 to 60 seconds of airplay before being mixed to another song, so its an anthology of choruses.. its sad if you want to hear the whole song, but with this format, it keeps the crowd going.. and going.
Crowd: Asian, the clean classy types. Not many teeny boppers. If there were any, they were cleverly disguised.
Entertainment: No extra entertainment besdies the MC. There was air conditioning though
Atmosphere: Small atmosphere, but a classy crowd with a “clean” venue keeps it viable to stay inside. By clean, I mean they have air conditioning in the standing area. However on the dancefloor there isn’t much air con and it may get a little stuffy.. but only a little as its not too packed when we got inside.

Timeline

My clothes are so awesome, even guys want them
I bump into a friend, who is absolutely off his chops. First item on the agenda is the discussion of clothes. He wishes to swap shirts with me! No way, not if I had a buttoned shirt on. It would take too long! So of course, the easier solution was to switch to another item of clothing. He demands to swap his pants with mine! He proceeds by undoing his belt.. and undoing his fly… -____- oh no no no no no no no onononnonononononnoononononoo, this is not what I came to a club for! Had to stop him, but I’m sure if I were influenced enough I wouldve probably gone ahead with a swap.

I found the token white girl in the club.. well she found me
Imagine walking into a club full of asians. You are a blonde nordic girl. What do you do. Do what you do in every other club – let the guys chat you up and score some drinks. But then, suddenly, out of the corner of your eye, you see ME. you shiver in fear of my awesomeness. You succumb and can only do one thing and that is dance with me.

So the girl has stepped up to me and robs me of my hat without warning and dances around with it. This only meant one thing. Dance mode ON! We dance near the bar area, and we are basically surrounded by entire vicinity of men checking her out and probably thinking ‘Who is this really cool dude?’ Well my fellow men, I’m James Tran, and I am right now uncomfortable having you guys stare at me dance.

A collision of maximus proportions
Swedish girl is walking backwards, ass bent out, towards me, ready for grinding. Suddenly Melly sees me dancing and jumps in to say hello again to me. The guys watching me have a look that they are amazed I know the two most beautiful girls in the club. Melly is now standing between myself and the ass of the swede girl. It’s over before I could warn her. They collide, and the Swede’s heel has stomped on Melly’s toes. Melly is in some sort of pain but, as we all know, being stomped on by a heel only hurts for a few seconds. I tell Melly sorry and continue to grind with the Swede. Some friend I am. Hahahha.

Anyway, we keep dancing, and it comes to the point where myself and Swedie are eye to eye, ready for the kiss. Slowly we get closer, and closer. Then, finally, HER GIRLFRIEND CAME ALONG AND TAKES HER AWAY. MY GOD!! Nooooooooooo! THIS IS SO NOT HAPPENING !!! FML!! ngahhhhh But, alas, reality hit – she was gone. The love of my night taken away. To rub salt into my emotional wound, the count of women in the club has dropped by 20% when they left. The men who were staring at us, are now staring at me. I wonder what they are thinking now. I feel like a neutered dog. Please, my dear humane reader, put me to sleep now.

Melly from Melbourne @ Tao Nightclub Sydney

My top hat
I bought a top hat yesterday, and tonight it worked wonders. Women love it. I recommend it. Though, it does get stolen often… even photographed a thief in action!

Tao Nightclub Sydney - Just before a random steals my hat. Look at her hands! Why are people so unkind?

Arrivederci

Besides the Swede setback, we enjoyed dancing for the rest of the night. At departure time 4am, the place had about 20 guys and 2 girls left.

Recommendation
For a grand opening it was pretty good. Clean place, and reasonable entry price. Upstairs was also a kitchen if you were hungry. It’s a good all round venue for the asian rnb connoiseur. Music was good and crowd to match. Not too packed, but I was here at 2.30am, will have to see what it is like earlier in the night next time.

A new promoter has taken over Havana for two weeks only. Last week was packed out, and tonight was week two. I somehow got stuck at Haymarket Hotel, but eventually worked my way to Havana, albeit late at 2:30am, so here we go!

Katsuyaku Girls @ Havana Club de Luxe

Assessment Time: 2:30am – 4:00am
Website: http://www.havanaclub.com.au
Address: 169 Oxford St, Darlinghurst, Sydney
Dress Code / Door Policy: Casual ok. I was wearing a top hat, collared shirt, jeans and dress shoes, which had no complaints upon entry. Entry Fee / Cover Charge: $25 full price after midnight. They’ve upped it and it hurts my wallet.
Guestlist: Check facebook page.
Inside: One main danceflor for about 200 or so people. Both sides are lounge and booth areas. DJ at the front, and a bar on each other side – Enough to keep one happy
Cloak Room: $4 Bar: Didn’t drink tonight Music: At point of arrival (2.30am) it was some rnb, hip hop and house all mixed up.
Crowd: Asian with a few euros and islanders as well. It’s a little mixed.
Entertainment: Two dancing poles. Earlier in the night the Katsujuku girls were dancing the poles to the amazement of the crowd. There is also an MC tonight to keep the night going.
Atmosphere: Enough people and barely enough women to keep wanting to dance. I was surprised at the number of people left at this time.

Video
(I caught it during the house segment. Look at the crowd go!)

Click here to view the embedded video.

Timeline
I’m not alone
Marty invited me here, but he’s nowhere. He’s already left and dogged me. Bastard! But luckily for me, a girl is madly yelling out my name and waving at me as soon as I walk in. It’s a friend who I met in Melbourne for her birthday just two months ago. Insane. STRAIGHT INTO DANCE MODE. We hop up on the pole to dance and spin around the floor until she has to go.

with Melly @ Havana Club de Luxe Sydney

A cage of birds.
So the Harajuku girls – all 5 or so of them have apparently changed outfits into something normal and have rejoined the dancefloor at 3:30am. They’re on their own little circle dancing around. They’re not terribly good dancers normally but apparently are awesome with dancepoles. Naturally, most of the guys here want some action but it was not to be – Each of these girls had an personal security detail of 1.5 men for a total of 8 security guards. It was fucking insane. I have never seen professional dancers get so much security! Either they are really famous from where they originally came for, or they are really are paranoid of guys like me coming up and grind attacking them from behind. Seriously, imagine dancing in a club and you are SURROUNDED on the floor with big fat islander security guards. WHAT IS THE POINT?

MC Loves me
The MC tonight mingles with the crowd and checks my footwork, and he likes it. But christ, when I realised he was looking at me, I got the nerves and I couldn’t keep dancing. I just sort of fucked up and felt like an idiot. I hate impromptu dancing for other people. They expect some awesome routine that I have in store. Well, I don’t really have one.

Later in the night MC calls me out for standing against the wall resting. He tells me to start dancing again. LOL oh my god, talk about demanding!

Arrivederci
Club seriously started to die around 4:000, with a fight breaking out and girls leaving. I finally left. The Chicken-Katsu girls left at the same time as me. I had to wait until security cleared the entire area for them to leave properly. Pffftttttttt.

Recommendation
Note: Next week new promoters are coming in, so dont judge this review or previous Havana reviews on future nights. That said, for tonight, from what I experienced, Havana tonight gets a 6.5/10.

I’m sure it was more awesome earlier in the night.

I won two tickets to Good vibrations 2010 in a 25 words or less competition. ( I wrote a very clever line which I shall keep secret ). Matty made me enter the competition, so I gave the second ticket to him as reward. It was pretty hot midday so we bought some sombreros and awesome hologram sunnies at Market City and suddenly we were ready – so here we go!

Good Vibrations Festival @ Centennial Park

Assessment Time: 16:00 – 22:00 (closing time)
Website: http://www.gvf.com.au
Address: Centennial Park Sydney
Dress Code / Door Policy: Anything goes, no dress code.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: Prepaid tickets were $145 each. I won tickets to the show today.
Inside: There were 5 official big areas for the acts to appear. There were also 2 smaller sponsored areas for dancing as well.
Cloak Room: $5 per item
Bar: $8 light beers, $10 smirnoffs. Thanks to the cool weather, there weren’t so many people lining up for a bar, and we had some booze in our hands within 3 minutes of lining up.
Bathroom Line: Appalling at about 20 minutes
Acts: Salt-N-Pepa, Armand Van Helden, DJ Crazee, Aston Shuffle were the main acts we visited today. Other acts included Busta Rhymes, Naughty by Nature. The Killers and Friendly Fires (I was dying to see Friendly Fires) had pulled out of the Sydney show.
Music: A mix of Indie Rock, Hip Hop, and House
Atmosphere: Despite the pullouts, the atmosphere was buzzing throughout the whole day. People are everywhere and its quite good. Later in the early evening it starts to rain but not too hard, but it rains enough for people to get out their ponchos. Instead of being a downer, people embrace the rain and keep dancing and singing along. The rain is also a huge welcome as earlier it was pretty stinking hot earlier in the afternoon.

Videos:

Salt-N-Pepa : Let’s talka bout Sex + Man Dancing on Tent

Click here to view the embedded video.

Everyone is cheering for this guy more than Salt N Pepa – hilarious – The poor guy was most likely kicked out, but for immortal fame in the eyes of thousands? Sure, why not.

Salt-N-Pepa : Push It

Click here to view the embedded video.

I was disappointed with the Salt N Pepa set – didnt know they were doing a DJ set. They were playing house music for crying out loud!

DJ Crazee: Playing Daft Punk’s “Alive”

Click here to view the embedded video.

DJ Crazee’s set was aweseome.. very well mixed and kept everyone going. Not a dull beat. Was very happy with this set

Armand Van Helden Good Vibrations: Bonkers

Click here to view the embedded video.

Armand Van Helden (Duck sauce): aNYway

Click here to view the embedded video.

I enjoyed Armand’s set. The rain gave a bit more of a wet atmosphere, but really prevented me from doing some epic dancing – I was just standing around singing along to the songs like everybody else. It would have definitely been more epic if his set was originally set in the Laundry tent where the surface was dancable.

The Aston Shuffle: Play the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “heads will roll”

Click here to view the embedded video.

Timeline: So we got in without problems, cloak room no dramas – plenty of people on hand to help out, but when we went to Good Vibrations Stage.. we couldn’t even get close. There were just so many people!

Timeline

Big Sombrero Syndrome
We dig deep into the Good Vibrations crowd, but in every spot we stood, the people behind us would tell us to take off our Sombreros. HELL NO! We moved on and kept running into people who wanted us to “TAKE IT OFF!”. No. NO. nuuuuuuuuuuu!!! We finally found a little spot where there was a 1 metre gap behind us, an we happily stood there and watched the festivities.

Long toilet lines
These are a feature of every event for the people who purchased General tickets. Even so, there is only one VIP set of toilets – if you were at the back at the Star Bar area or the Roots tent, you would have to trek across to the other side of centennial park in order to get into the VIP tent and then there would probably be another line inside as well. Anyway we met a friend lining up for the toilets which was pretty funky dory!

We met them in the toilet line

Toilet competitions
Not sure if it was the sunnies, the sombreros or just our presence as men but we somehow are talking to all these girls in line! We made a challenge to see who would be quicker in the bathroom. I put down the gauntlet and declared I could be in an out in 1 minute. I barely scraped by – in and out of the toilet in 55 seconds. Oh yeahhh… Im the man! I can only thank god for giving me good muscular control over my bladder. I won the competition, but no prize to be had. Thats a relief.

Man with a suspicious backpack
There’s a man who has a backpack with a huge tube coming out of it and he’s sucking on it. How on earth did he sneak that in??!!

His girlfriend offers us a sip.. sure. It’s just water!! BOOO.

It's only water from the backpack

2 girls tonging each other like theres no tomorrow
We go inside the green room – its very relaxed here, but of course theres a DJ and we dance. The music is surprisingly easy to dance to and I enjoy it. I can’t remember exactly what type of house it was. There’s also a very high ratio of women in here, probably because this room was sponsored by SportsGirl. In a matter of moments I am dancing with a girl, woo! But then a friend of hers steps up behind her and grinds her bum. Ok fair enough, we keep on dancing, a sandwich of sorts. But this second girl.. she was totally grinding her friend really really rough, like dry humping. Suddenly a girl takes my sombrero and they start making out hardcore under my awesome hat!! Matty is laughing his ass off. I imagine myself under my hat, and I feel sad.

Last act (and women) of the night
So for the last act we went to The Aston Shuffle. I had already seen Basement Jaxx at Future Music Last year, so it was some proper dance time! I’m not familiar at all with the Aston Songs, but everyone under the tent here were dancing and cheering. I especially went all out with my socks being wet, and we get lots of awesome attention. We dance and a hot asian girl joins in our circle. I once again did something stupid and TALKED TO HER. She ran off.

But hey, another girl came along, gave me a random pash. I tried to talk to her but she, too, ran off. I REALLY HAVE AN UGLY VOICE!

Look! It's a girl in a punctured ball used as a poncho, lol.

Recommendation
It rained today and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everybody else was going through the same experience and it became a kind of a comraderie. It just wasn’t fun walking out of the venue. Speaking of walking out, it was THE LONGEST walk out to the bus stop, and having wet socks really sucks. At least I wasn’t muddy like some of the others that were spotted.

Apparently the Naughty By Nature set was epic. I could see their entire tent was packed with no moving room. Anyhow, without the Killers, it was still an awesome day for us. Having free tickets really helped.

Good Vibrations Sydney – 8/10

0/10 tonight. Blame the rain and lack of promotion.

Pavillion Hotel

Danced with C tonight. Met some Japanese girls via dance, but some white guys were constantly cracking onto them. Disgusting.

We go back upstairs later and dance for a bit. C is pulled into a dance circle and impresses all. When she tries to leave she is pulled back in and can’t escape for another half hour.

Not much on my side of things, tried to dance with some girls but they dont think i’m awesome enough.

I’m a third party invite to a birthday at Helm Bar – and this weekend I’ve been so sick and its been pissing down buckets of rain the past few days as well as tonight, so I can only manage to go to a bar tonight, and not a club for a review – but regardless there is a dancefloor… so here we go!

Saturdays @ Helm Bar

Assessment Time: 11pm – 12:30am

Website: http://www.helmbar.com.au

Address: Aquarium Whart, Wheat Road, Darling Harbour Sydney

Dress Code / Door Policy: Smart dress code applies. I wore a collared shirt, vest, jeans.

Entry Fee / Cover Charge: Free, its just a bar.

Guestlist: None

Inside: One bar for the entire area split into two outdoor regions and the indoor dance area. One outdoor area is corderned off for the birthday for 60 people with stools and tables. Same with the other area. The inside dancefloor can hold maybe 150 people or so. DJ area is to the left corner, placed outside. Outside there are views of darling harbour, but mostly boats.

Cloak Room: None

Bar: 1 bar

Music: House, rnb – all modern contemporary commercial music

Crowd: General crowd were all dressed nice but hard to tell – mostly caucasian early to mid 20s crowd.

Atmosphere: It’s raining heaps outside, so the atmosphere isn’t so good on the dancefloor. It’s not too busy and not too dead, but its ‘bustling’ near the bar area.

360 Video

Click here to view the embedded video.

Timeline

Chicken dancing

Dj started to turn the music up a notch.. signifying dance time! A crazy dude or two jump out and do some dancing. Friends want to dare how effective a chicken dance is at picking up chicks. Ok, so let’s try it out! So I jumped in with the most awesome chicken dance you have ever seen in your life. Let me tell you, you had to be there. I had the quacking, the flapping, the wiggling and the clapping down pat. It was genuine chicken dance at its most raw and energetic. Nobody would be able to resist. So the target group had 5 girls, and as I did my farmyard dance, they just looked at me. Only one imitated me and she was the one to talk to me.. it was the mother hen of the group -____-

Everyone else looked pretty uncomfortable being in the presence of James, le chicken man.

I get guys dancing with me yay

I do some lazy foot work and suddenly a guy comes up and dances really close to me. He’s beginning to sweat and he’s really into it and it catches on.. and soon enough we’re just yelling ‘woohoo!’ at each other. Then he leaves and dances with his amigo like madmen.

Arrivederci

Well that was it, we left at 12:30 to go to Haymarket, but it was full and it closes at 2am anyway so there was no point trying to go inside.

Recommendation

Helm bar for drinks only and a little tiny dance. Aka a good bar for oldies – however bungalow or even cargo down the wharf would be a better choice if you wanted more of a dance and lively crowd. This is not a place for dance, but its clean. 4.5/10

Saturday Nights @ The Mean Fiddler

Assessment Time: 11:00pm – 2:30am

Website: http://www.meanfiddler.com.au

Address: Cnr Commercial and Windsor Road, Rouse Hill (aka woop woop)

Dress Code / Door Policy: Can anyone say tight! There is a sign to help people know what is allowed and not allowed inside after 9pm. No hats no rat tails – all in check to make everyong equal and the same. I’m surprised there wasn’t a no asian policy. Tonight I wore pants, dress shoes, collared shirt, white bow tie and vest purchased earlier that day.

Entry Fee / Cover Charge: Free for the woolshed and back bar. Sub bar (where the main DJ act plays) had a $15 cover charge. After 2am, it was free for all.

Guestlist: None

Inside: Enter into the woolshed where it doubles as a dining hall during dinner time. 3 bars line the walls and the stage is out at front. Holds a good 1000 or so people.

Cloak Room: None

Bar: 5 or 6 bars throughout the place. Woolshed bar waiting times were pretty long but if you were bothered to walk to the back, the line was much shorter of only 2 or 3 people.

Music: The back bar had mostly classic retro rock. Main bar had a live band playing retro and some contemporary music. Sub bar had house music going on. Since the last time I came here, the RNB room seems to have closed. It might be just open on Fridays.

Crowd: Sub Bar was more of the younger crowd but tonight it seemed to be oldies night! The combination of the retro music and the placing of the bar in the middle of woop woop has attracted hordes of the older crowd. That said .. almost everyone here is white. There are some minority groups represented here as well.

Entertainment: No extra entertainment besides the music

Atmosphere: Woolsheed spacious and big and fun. Back bar also fun and cosy. sub bar didnt really get to check out until after 2am but it looked pretty busy down there. After 2am only the real energetic party dancers remained.

Walkthrough video:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Timeline

Almost kicked out?

We were rejected at the door for having hats on. So we put them back in the car. We walked in OK but not even one minute inside, a security bouncer grabs both me and Marty’s shoulders and were about to kick us out. Another bouncer says ‘don’t worry its ok’ and we are set free. Was it because we were wearing bowties? Who knows.

How can you NOT let us into The Mean Fiddler??

It’s Cougar night

So we came in and there are many people in their late 20’s and in their 30’s dancing and to the music. There are also many women and I would say at least half of them were cougar age! I think within a few minutes one of my friends is already dancing with one. It’s crazy.

Taking over the back room

It’s too loud in the woolshed so Marty and i go to the smaller back room. It’s seemingly more friendlier, and eaiser to do silly dance moves to. Marty does his thing .. I do my thing.. working in tandem the whole crowd pretty much is loving us… and the bowties really helped! Met a birthday girl and her friend. Both married I think. Met the whole group – pretty friendly guys.

Someone even took a video of us on their phone and announced that we would be on youtube.

We each get a free drink …. from a guy each.

1. A random guy bought me a free drink for being awesome on the dancefloor

2. Another random guy bought Marty a drink for no reason or similar reasons

3. A third random guy bought our 3rd friend a drink after meeting him in the bathroom.

My only conclusion is that, if you’re a guy and asian – the Mean Fiddler back room is a great place to be for free drinks.. especially if you can dance or talk to people in the bathroom.

People are really nice here!

He got me a drink – people are friendly here at The Fiddler

2am: Bit of dance at the sub bar

The Sub Bar area is where the main DJ acts and more contemporary music is played for us young people. After 2am its open for all (as it closes at 2:30) and so we went down for a boogie. The first person I noticed was a dwarf-like girl. She’s a regular here, because its the same girl I saw last year when I was here at the Fiddler.

Other than that two people see me dance and like me and we all dance for a bit. They’re cool and we invited their whole group to our apartment afterwards for an afterparty woot woot!

Sub Bar with two new friends- The Mean Fiddler

Arrivederci: One more grind

Girl spots me. She tells her guy friend to piss off and he does. She dances with me. Awesome. But its almost 3am…. the lights switch on and we are all kicked out. She starts asking where her guy friend is – how would I know??

Recommendation:

Pretty good night for all involved but a bit shocked at the missing RNB room and the amount of older crowd. Not that there is anything wrong with that – it probably gave it a more fun vibe!

Door Policy: Tight on the female/male ratio. Bring girls with you if you are a guy wanting to get in. Many a man hath been rejected from Flow for being alone or by grouping with his fellow man. This in turn helps with atmosphere

Guestlist: See website

Timeline

A JamesTran.net clubbing blog follower recognises me!

I declared in a previous post that I wasn’t going to wear my pirate outfit anymore when going out. Well tonight I was wearing it. A friend borrowed my outfit and had returned it to me, just before I stepped into the club. So I thought, why not, let’s wear it again!

Anyway someone stops me and says “You’re JAMES TRAN aren’t you!!”. Why, yes, I am. I don’t know who he is but he introduces himself as someone from Melbourne who emailed me for advice on Sydney clubs on Australia Day. Oh now I remember!

“James I thought you weren’t wearing the pirate outfit anymore!” he adds. I am totally busted – MY OWN READERS throwing back statements I made right back into my face! -____- arrrrrr…. I mentioned I would explain it all in the upcoming review. He is also planning to visit Pumphouse tomorrow night. I pretty much yelled at him not to go, but he goes anyway! lol is my advice not even worth listening to? I know you’re reading this right now dude, and I really hope you learned your lesson!! That lesson being Pumphouse isn’t the best venue at all for a Saturday night RnB fix.

Danced with random girl thanks to the pirate outfit

So what is done is done. I am wearing the pirate outfit and I’m going to make the most of it! It’s way too dark upstairs and I plod downstairs, where a woman is dancing downstairs. She is obviously lost as she isn’t Asian. Jumped on in and we dance. She holds up well but I couldn’t push it any further.. boo.

Didn’t even really hang out with the Birthday Boy

As I mentioned earlier, tonight I was here for a Birthday. Well, I saw him and said hello. Then he had to go somewhere else. It was really the only time I spoke with him the whole night, haha. Some friend I am. I suppose we are more acquaintances at this point in time.. but you know, 10 years is a long time to be acquainted with someone.

An amazingly packed line

I went downstairs to take a breather as its impossible to survive up there in the sardine room. However on trying to get back up there is a really long line. So long that security tell us to piss off and come back later. How depressing! You think the line outside on George St is long enough, and you have to face the second line inside the Bar!! What a rort!!

A free drink coupled with a sad tale

I met a guy in line and he liked my pirate outfit so much he bought me a drink, haha. I really didn’t want the drink but he insisted. He was 27, and only manages to come out clubbing once every 2 months because of work. OMG once every 60 days you get to go out?? DON’T EVER LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU MY DEAR READER!! Otherwise you will end up like this helpless man, and buy drinks for me.

Arrivederci

We left at closing time

Recommendation

It’s still small.. it still gets a bit stuffy upstairs, the girls are still pretty good looking enough to bring us boys back.

This is Flow @ World Square Pub and it gets a 6.5/10

Prologue

I was at Haymarket. It was dead for an odd reason. Anyway we left for our intended venue – Blue Butterflly @ Arthouse at around midnight. The line was heaps massive (like ridiculous as usual) but we join the queue anyway.

ONE HOUR LATER we are in the front.

30 MINUTES LATER WE ARE STILL IN THE FRONT, while guestlisters and people who know organisers/bouncers head straight in. Frustration!!

It was probably another 10 minutes to go, but friends want to go home. We split and I go to Verandah, for a backup birthday (Oh I know, I’m such a dog). Here we go!

Funky Buddah @ Verandah Bar

Assessment Time: 1.30am – 3am

Website: www.funkybuddha.com

Address: 55 Elizabeth St | www.verandah.com.au

Dress Code / Door Policy: Casual ok. Recently they have allowed patrons with rat tails to enter. So most people from most walks of asia are here.

Entry Fee / Cover Charge: $25

Guestlist: We were too late for guestlist. It is $20 before midnight, $25 after

Inside: There are two separate rooms. Keep this in mind. There is a small curtained off room which is the trance room. The main room is RnB, which is separated somewhat into two regions – the dance region, and the bar/hanging out region, where you stand and mingle with your drinks in your hand.

Cloak Room: $10 for a big bag, its the most expensive cloak rooming service at any venue I have been to, proudly brought to you by Funky Buddha.

Bar: I didn’t drink tonight.

DJ: Normal asian DJs on rotation tonight

Music: RnB and Trance. RnB music was all the modern stuff, not much old school at all besides the West Coast rap stuff. Trance was very dancable here – there is definitely a lack of asian places out there.

Crowd: Asian

Entertainment: Some podiums for people to dance on

Atmosphere: Pretty busy in the RnB room at peak, but when it dies down, it is very noticable because of the open setup of Verandah. Trance room sadly didn’t enjoy as many people – there were only 10 or 15 people most at a time in the trance room, and out of those people, there would be no more than 5 people raving about at the same time. But its pretty pretty dark in here – you can barely see anything.

Timeline

Podium timeshare? NO

There was a dude dancing, showing off his awesome dance moves. OK. He is better than me, that I can accept. But he just kept dancing song after song after song. He was a total podium hog and worse of an attention whore than I was. Finally he got off but someone else got on and started dancing as well. Sigh.

Someones sailory birthday

Theres about 30 girls all dressed up in sailor outfits. Someone’s birthday. It was hot. That is all.

Young much?

Yeah, I felt old as hell – so many young people. Yes, even though I can pass as 18 with my braces, I felt like I was surrounded by 16 year olds. It’s so bad yet so good. Though, I didn’t really get to see any other people with braces on, I could be totally wrong. I DID SEE HEAPS OF RATTIES THOUGH!! I’m sure they are just going through a hair phase, like my brother is right now (he chooses to not go to the same clubs as me). We met a 24 year old girl.. so i suppose its ok for an almost 26 year old to be stil clubbing, right? RIGHT? ….

Im in the yellow

Arrivederci

Left once it became too much of a sausage fest.

Summary and Recommendation

I had low expectations but it was not bad.. the Trance room kept my dancing feet satisfied, and the ratio was acceptable. 6.5/10

Address: 3 Lime St Sydney

Dress Code / Door Policy: You must look sharp, nice dress shoes, pants and collared shirt are a minimum and should be enough to get in. No large groups of men. Avoid jeans and casual shoes such as chucks. I barely got in with black runners tonight, only because the rest of my outfit was pretty snazzy, I was alone in line and I was sober.

Entry Fee / Cover Charge: Free

Guestlist: None, so if you get ‘guestlisted’, you’re deemed not good enough for the club based on your appearance

Inside: One large bar, with small dance area and DJ inside. Outside courtyard area surrounds the perimeter of the bar. Pretty ’spacy’ outside.

Cloak Room: None

Music: Mix of old school house and modern house. It’s not too hard, and pretty casual but good to dance to. Oh a very esoteric description there, but it was pretty generic safe music to play for a crowd like this.

Crowd: Older (and better behaved) crowd – people in their 20’s, 30s. Mostly white.

Entertainment: No extra entertainment besides the DJ

Atmosphere: Strict dress code makes the place look good. Atmosphere was pretty much lets drink and dance, and enjoy the water views of Darling Harbour.

Wasn’t here for long. Just lots of dance. It’s me with farewell girl and her girlfriends. They think i’m uber cute, but they’re in their 30’s, and they’re all spoken for. SHAME! I hate being so … young sometimes. hahaha

Braces!

Ever since I got braces last year, its so fun bumping into other people who also have braces. It’s like we have this.. connection. So in our group was another dude with braces!! So great, so here’s a photo:

I have just (as I am writing this) decided to make an album of all the people I meet who have braces. It’ll be fun!!!

If you would like a place to dance as well as have a chance to have a drink and converse outside, this is a safe choice, especially if you are not a fan of the constantly loud clubs with 18 year olds getting smashed. 8/10

Prologue

Tonight was a birthday. The venue – Se7en. Se7en I heard was good on Fridays for Asian RNB for Melbourne, but what about Saturday? Saturday is House. That’s fine, I like house.

“Are you on the guestlist?”. A bad sign already.

Well what do you know, the birthday girl HAS organised a guestlist. The ratio of girls to guys is 2:1. However theres about 20 of us. Oh boy and let me tell you, we looked pretty sexy.

“I’m sorry, there is no guestlist under that name”

Oh wow – $10 for anyone who can guess why we were turned away. Oh, here’s a CLUE. Look what happened to them. They’ve moved onto a new event already! Some Melbourne house clubs are just as dodgy as Sydneys.

Ok, so now that was out of the way, there was only one venue left to try that I had a such a lovely time last time – Lavish @ Watermark Bar .. So here we go!

Lavish @ Watermark Bar (Melbourne)

Assessment Time: 11:00pm – 2:30am (closing time)

Website: http://www.watermark.com.au, http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&gid=4553158958

Address: 8/800 Bourke St, Docklands, Melbourne

Dress Code / Door Policy: Smart Casual, but its safer to err on the Smart side. Large groups of guys are likely to be rejected here. Luckily we were with a posse of girls.

Entry Fee / Cover Charge: $20, $15 on guestlist.

Guestlist: See facebook page for details. A friend knew one of the promoters and she managed to get us in.

Inside: Tonight as you walk in it is still the same setup. Main small room to hold 100 or so people. It’s a tight squeeze with the bar on the right side. DJ at the back. Tonight the back area behind the DJ was closed off. Upstairs there was another two rooms, one pretty loungy to sit 30 or so and the top level was just a lounge with a bar – with lots of people – presumably for a birthday. Good views to match.

Back downstairs there is a second external room with a second DJ. The room is also a smaller tight of a squeeze than the main room to hold 100 or less. Bar is also in here. Just outside is a smoking area of equivalent size. Phew.

Cloak Room: Yes, there is a cloak room

Bar: 3 bars. Prices unknown

Music: RnB in the main room. Modern contemporary RnB you hear on the radio. It’s good and people dance to it. In the other room is commercial/electro house. I liked it here as well but my asian friends are always in the RnB area.

Crowd: Asian to the max.

Entertainment: No extras to entertain us tonight. No MC as far as I can remember.

Atmosphere: When we came in it was good, but not packed or too busy – after an hour or so it did pick up and eventually the place became booby trapped with asians. Became very packed. I would imagine the line outside being busy still.

Timeline

Reusing my white wig tonight.

I forked out a good $60 or so on my Gandalf the White outfit for Sensation White 2 days ago – it was only fair that I make the most o fit by wearing my wig again tonight – just to see how things went!

My little outfit - Lavish Watermark

Stage Hogging and picking the crowd

Being guests in this lovely city, we had the default right to get up on the podium and SHAKE IT FOR SYDNEY! So that’s what I did, and I got all the others up as well. I have a fan of Japanese girls looking at me with amusement- So with the approval of her friends I grabbed one and get to straight up dance and grind with her. Oh woot! It’s funny you can’t grind a random on the street without being labelled a creep, but inside a club, grinding with someone random is considered normal.

Podium with Jap girl at Lavish - Watermark Bar

So things are heating up but she has to LEAVE! UGH it’s only 1am or some ridiculously early time. My dream of a japanese wife eludes me once again. Bad for me now because I can’t hit on any other girl in that room who saw me do the grinding deed… I spent the next hour looking for her in case she was still inside the club. Nothing.

My Camera goes missing

Oh nooo you didn’t!

Oh yes I did.

The camera was in my pocket I swear to god. A few minutes later I do a random self check of my inventory and my CAMERA IS MISSING. Oh no. I am panicking right now. I spend the rest of the entire night looking for my camera, asking every single person I met or took a photo with if they somehow were stil holding onto my camera. I interrogated every person who held a camera which looked similar to mine. Soon enough, it was closing time. I asked security, bar staff, and the cloak room if anyone was kind enough to hand in a camera. Who in their right mind would hand in my awesome camera with a million awesome pictures? OH MY GOD NOBODY DID. SOMEONE HAS MY CAMERA AND DARES NOT RETURN IT???!! NO. I have so many epic photos on there from 2009, it is sad that it was lost this way.

Have not seen my camera since.

The only contact details on the camera was ONE photo of me which says “Add me on facebook James Tran” on the back of it – Since that day I’ve been logging onto facebook to see if anyone with my camera would add me, but of course, the person who has it has probably sold or kept the camera to themselves. I STILL WANT MY PHOTOS THOUGH!!

So thats what constituted the latter half of my night – very sad.

Arrivederci

Kicked out at closing time as I continue searching for my camera.

Recommendation

Despite losing my camera the second half of the night, I did enjoy the first half of the night.

Lavish @ Watermark bar (First Half) – 7/10

Lavish @ Watermark bar (overall including losing my camera) – 3/10
