1AM looking for a place to dance…..

Clubs that were rejected tonight
Flow @ World Square Pub / Equilibrium:
We planned to go here tonight. There is no line outside. That’s good. $20 entry. Though as we got to the door, the internal line inside to go upstairs was packed. there was about 50 people croweded at the base of the stairs waiting for their turn to go upstairs. Oh hell no – we are not going in! So walk off we go…

Tourism @ Tao Lounge:
There was an event on tonight. The bouncer said “Don’t even bother coming in here.” We wanted to see what it was. Bouncer: “Go in for a bit of a laugh if you want. Nobody is dancing in there”. So we went in side. It was free entry anyway. There was about……….. 17 people including us 4. A guy and girl were on the dancefloor. She is standing doing nothing, and he is moving his arms up and down, like he is perforing curls on an invisible 1kg dumbell. It is ridiculous – and so is the music. We left after a wasted 10 minutes.

V Bar had cover charge so we didn’t go in, but it looked dead.

Puls8 @ Shark Hotel was dead as well tonight. (Saturdays are better).

Our final destination – random private party @ Burdekin Hotel
Continued the merry walk down Oxford St, where we strike up some ye old conversation with the patrons outside Burdekin Hotel. They were nice enough to invite us to their private party upstairs at the top level! Booyah!

Got inside – we are really the only asians here, but everyone here is friendly. Most are dancing, its cool. There’s a DJ and the room is dark and ideal for dancing. Mirror covering the back wall for a bigger impression of the room. Enough lounges for the size of the dancefloor. It’s a nice little place for a private party indeed.

There was really only one other good dancer here, but he seemed to only dance whenever I was dancing, and only with the girls i was cracking onto as well. A bit stalkerish, when a guy tails you around, but what are you going to do aye.

The other half of the time, the girl who brought us in was running back and forth from the bathroom throwing up, lol. Anyway everyone here is friendly. Unisex bathrooms provided much chat fodder as well. Met lots of people that night.

Arrivederci
I think at 5AM we were just really freaking tired, and yet people were still in here dancing their socks off. Bloody amazing. This is how people at a club should be! Would I have my birthday here? It is ok to have a birthday here, but only if there are heaps of people. The atmosphere of the floor provides more for dancing rather than socialising once the music is up and pumping, so check it out first before having an event here.

So after the renovations at Shark Hotel about a year ago, they have finally formally introduced a clubbing night again for Friday and Saturdays. Marty has invited me to check it out both nights – so here we go!

Puls8 @ Shark Hotel Sydney
Assessment Time: 11pm – 1am (Friday), 11pm-3am (Saturday)
Opening Hours: Early in the day. Music starts up 10:30 for a 3am close.
Website: http://www.sharkhotel.com.au
Address: 127 Liverpool St, sydney
Dress Code / Door Policy: Casual was ok in here.
Entry Fee / Cover Charge: Free entry all night.
Guestlist: None, due to free entry.
Inside: Shark Hotel is quite a big place, but most of the area is carpeted – Half of it for stools and lounges, the other half for pool tables. The dancefloor sits in between both of these areas. It’s an elevated floor about 50cm off the floor. The DJ is also elevated along with the floor. There is also a small ‘buffer’ dancefloor zone of 2 metres on one side of the dancefloor closer to the ba
Cloak Room: None
Bar: One bar to service everyone. 2 Sminoff Black Ice’s for $18.50. $3 drinks before midnight. This place has probably the cheapest drinks anywhere.
DJs: Unknown
Music: RnB, House, Top 40
Crowd: Most are asians, but there are also indians, euros and some aussie locals.
Entertainment: Photographer
Atmosphere: Friday – Dead, it peaked with about 10 people on the dance podiumm, but died after that.

Saturday – The dancefloor was busy the whole time we were there. The surrounding areas of stools and lounges weren’t so busy.

Puls8 (Friday) @ Shark Bar - Peak Time.. pretty not busy.

Walkthrough Video on a Friday – Very dead

Click here to view the embedded video.

Previous incarnations of clubbing nights at Shark Hotel bring back memories of a dark room at the back, full of people dancing, and ALWAYS ending up in a fight, complete with chairs and tables being flung in a multitude of directions. Will tonight be the same? Keep reading to find out…

Friday’s Timeline
Dancing with the crowd
Firstly, as we arrived, there was only one guy up there dancing on his own. A sole warrior. A European version of me. Marty and I jump up for a dance. There are now 3 losers up on the dancefloor at 11pm. Later some other people who were gutsy enough come up .. and it was alright with the 6 of us now. It didn’t really get much more than that.

No people = No shoes
It’s so dead that there’s 3 of us. The 3rd person, a girl, has taken off her shoes to dance, and no security has come up to tell her off. It’s pretty relaxed in here.

She left her shoes on the podium to go barefoot. Shoes did not get stolen nor was she told off.

Mistaken Identity
Me and Marty are out tonight, and we’re wearing similar vests. Marty is wearing his hat and he steps off the floor and it’s just me. A girl who was dancing with Marty turns around and asks me “wheres your hat?”. oh.. my.. god… did she think I was Marty, the guy she was just dancing 5 minutes with?? She wasn’t kidding, and she really thought I was Marty. Oh my god.. WE DO LOOK THE SAME!!

We totally look the same

Saturday’s Timeline
Reviving a dancefloor
On Arrival, there are two guys dancing up on the dancefloor. Once again, Marty and me jump up and join in… nobody joins us and it takes Beyonce’s “single ladies” to get about 8 women up on the dancefloor, which is a great result for Shark Hotel.

Photographer loves us
Early on, the photographer takes photos of us and loves us so much he gives us a free drink each. Oh, score! It was Yager Beer time!

Photographer loves me! Last known photo of my hat.

Jagermeister promotions

There’s a Jagermeister stand, giving out merchandise per Jager shot taken. Keyrings, shirts and bandanas were up on offer. I got a bandana and keyring bottle opener

Jagermeister stand - shot of jager for a free item!

Hat gone
I’ve lent my hat to a girl Marty was dancing with, and then she left. My awesome hat is gone. NO. Marty I want you to get my hat back!

Having to fend off sleazy men
I’m with a friend, and she’s heavily tipsy. You leave her alone for one minute and some guy is grinding with her. So really I have to run around and fend off anyone. I think at one point, we were in conversation and a guy comes up and asks me if he could talk to her for ‘just a sec’. Like hell no, shine your dick away from me! Barf. He didn’t even offer me a bribe or anything.Another guy comes up to us in the bar and grabs her crotch. Barf again. My cousin is hit on heaps as well, but she was able to take care of herself, despite her calling out for me for help. LOL. Note – all these sleazes were euro dudes.

Arrivederci
(Friday) Pretty much after 1pm the whole place had died and we left for Star Bar
(Saturday) Left at 3am, there were still some people dancing.

Recommendation
I would avoid coming here on a Friday night. However Saturday nights here are much better, theres more people and the dancefloor is busy enough to have your own private dance without being stared at. If you want a clean place with cheap drinks, and a quick dance, check this out. But only come with friends. You may not enjoy it here on your own. In comparison to the old clubbing nights a year or so ago – the DJ is better and the place is no longer full of drunkards – no longer you should be worried about getting smacked by a wooden chair or glassed in the eye thanks to plastic cups- one can also have a chat and play some pool as well.

Puls8 (Saturday Night) @ Shark Hotel – 6.5/10

A late Friday night at the Oxford Art Factory

Leadup
An hour to kill – a mini 4-club dance spree:
Tonight I wore just jeans, a shirt and sneakers..

Pontoon - Crowd was half indian, half everyone else. Free entry. Casual door policy. RnB. Good venue for an RnB fix. Left after 30 minutes – another asian dancing guy was taking the girls. He was out there, just dancing with any girl he saw, and was doing quite well. I wondered where my energy was tonight.

Pavillion – Two girls in the front, 4 on the side, and indian guys for the rest of the people on here. DJ was playing west coast rap. My favourite anthems were being played (Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, etc). A crazy indian was dance-cracking onto the two girls in the front. He was out there, just shaking his body loose. I wondered where my energy was tonight. I think I get intimidated by other good dancers in a desolate setting.

Shark Bar/Hotel – I walked in and there was nobody on the floor. I was about to leave, but they started to play “Push it” by Salt N Pepa. I love this song so I *had* to get up there. So I jumped up and did a little boogie to the song, to the amusement of everybody staring at the elevated dancefloor in the middle. Everyone who looked at me I looked back, and they would stare away. A group of people at the very back took a photo of me and waved hi. The song ended and I ran off.

Spectrum – My usual friends had gone home, so I met up with the French backpackers for some dance. We checked out Spectrum first. Free entry. House. We went upstairs and it was *dead* as. A handful of people dancing, a handful of people sitting down, a small room, and that was it. I don’t think this was meant to be a place for clubbing. Reminded me like an oxford st version of Manning Bar at USYD. I can’t imagine that place being a place for clubbing. We left quite quickly.

We then stumbled upon Oxford Art Factory and settled in..

After Work Art Fridays @ The Oxford Art Factory (Art After Dark) (29th May 2009)

Note: This review is primarily for the ‘Art After Dark’ Room’, and not the ‘Live Art Space’ where a cover charge applied.

About Oxford Art Factory (assessment time 1.30am)
Address: 38-46 Oxford St, Darlinghurst
The Bar: Jugs of beers and cocktails offered for a reasonable price.
Website: http://www.oxfordartfactory.com
Inside: Walking downstairs, there are two rooms:

Live Art Space: Carpeted area with central wooden dancefloor, with DJ up on stage. At the back is an elevated area where more lounges exist. It was mostly dancefloor space.

Live Art Space - Oxford Art Factory (image oxfordartfactory.com)

Art After Dark: (where we were) A further flight of stairs down takes you to this room. It’s pretty small, holding about 100 people max. A bar as well here. The room has a high ceiling length, and a big TV on one end of the wall. It’s been painted white, which is different. Tonight there were only lounges along the wall, and not sticking out as in the picture.

Art After Dark Bar - Oxford Art Factory - This is where we hung out (image oxfordartfactory.com)

About After Work Art Fridays: (assessment time 1.30am)
Entry Fee/Cover Charge: Free for the Art After Dark Bar, $15 for the DJ in the Live Art Space Room tonight. After 3am it was free for all.
Crowd / Dress Code: Artsy types. People in their 20′s and 30′s. Lots of hats around. Anything goes.
Atmosphere: I was expecting not many people to be here, so guess how surprised I was when I saw the whole room packed! Well, it was 1.30am, and it was a small area, but usually at an average to bad venue, 1.30am is when people start going home. So overall it was a good sign.
Music: Art After Dark Bar – Earlier in the evening there were live bands playing, but we missed that. So when we arrived, the band area was cleared and there was a DJ playing a mix of music across pop, rnb, retro and rock. Basically a bit of everything, and each upcoming song would be of a different genre. Somehow though the crowd was fully right into every song being played.

Live Art Space – DJ Sega (USA) was the main act playing tonight, (Indie). I didn’t get to check him out. Later another DJ was playing around 3am, with some dubstep beats, and another artist came up for some raps where I could practise some krumpin on the very open dance floor. The crowd here were all the hardcore types left, so everybody was into it.

Timeline

Not much dance room
Because of the TINY amount of room and the way in which the room was designed, our group of 8 people basically took up the middle section of the floor area. This meant every person walking in and out to the toilets or the bar had to go through our circle or around us. So basically the entire time our circle would be interrupted and I was, at least, constantly shuffling back and forth, with people hitting into us and spilling some beer onto each of us. Also because of the room, there weren’t many other large circles.. usually a max of 4 people would be per circle. Also I couldn’t pull off any crazy antic dance moves!! It was really cramped, but not shoulder to shoulder, I had about 20cm of room around me.

Boobs! (So your loyalty to this blog has paid off)
The screen in this room was playing some movie from the 80′s (You could tell by the hairstyles – it could have been the 70s). When we got in, there was a zoom in of a woman’s boobs, and someone was fondling them, just to test out to see how bouncy they were. A minute later, a couple are having a cigarette on the sofa, while the woman, still topless, starts dancing behind them!! It was the most bizarre film clip, but she was a pretty good dancer with her arm movements. Her boobs stayed bouncy throughout the dance routine.

I look up a few moments later and I see a naked man lying on bed, his bum crack towards the camera. gross. Back to dancing. Look up again after another few minutes, and there’s a young man and her partner – and guess what she’s doing – SHE’S TYING A CLOTH AROUND HIS DICK LIKE A BOWTIE!! What the hell! What kinda stuff is this??? He then stands up , with this cloth dangling from his dick, and he stands behind the bedpost. That was all. So bizarre!

It wasn’t surprising that there were couples making out everywhere in the room.

I wore casual. I am rewarded with solo dancing.
We mostly stayed within our circle through the night. A friend dances around with his bald head and basically gets all the attention! Damn. I had nothing. No wig, no hat, just my shirt, jeans and dodgy sneakers – I was very casual and quite content just dancing it out on my own. Everyone else was dressed their own style. Crazy hairdos, different fashion styles.. half the crowd wearing hats – it would have been quite difficult to attract attention. Only later in the night near closing time, the music became.. I don’t know.. I wasn’t too into it anymore and wanted to just dance it out in the other room.

Coda
We all get kicked out of the Live Art room around 4am. Music was still going in the Art After Dark Bar but nobody was dancing. We were all buggered and left, quite happy with this place. I liked this place and would recommend it if you like all sorts of music, don’t mind crowded packed small bars, and mingling it up with the artsy types. You know who you are.

We just finished an all you can eat pizza.. and feeling really really lethargic we decide to head to some clubs… we were thinking of St James.. but that was overdone latey – and Roof bar / Skygardens shut its doors on Saturday (presumably forever).

Coolabar:
We got in and there were 3 mature ladies dancing on their own. Besides their 4 friends on the side not dancing, there were no other girls in the club. We bought a drink each and sat down then skulked about the start of a crap night… we see an old couple walk by outside, look inside and immediately walk out again. I didnt even jiggle my butt in there.

Cheers
Got here about 11.30. and it was fairly busy, but only one or two people dancing on the floor. I do a bit of a dance, and people were looking. The scary thing about Cheers is that there are people literally bordering the dancefloor staring at you drinks in their hand – you have no breathing room, and its really intimidating. I still have yet to brave dancing here alone. Eventually it got really packed.

Stripper man dance move
We’re dancing and we hear screams. A random guy behind us is grinding against a random girl. She’s screaming but keeps going, as she secretly likes it. Everyone just stares at him. You can actually hear him say “yeah thats right, that’s all i want, a little dance”, like a pedophile – I couldnt stop laughing.. it was crazy awesome. He then pulls up his shirt to show off his flat tummy.. poor girl nearly fainted and her friends pulled her away. Everyone gave him props.

After this the pizza was getting to us.. we left for…

Shark Bar / Hotel
Two shit clubs so far, it would be fun to make it 3 in a row. We got in, and there was already a group of guys taking all the girls. They had already established a circle and were doing crazy shit. Needless to say, we ran out of energy after about 5 or 6 songs. There was nobody in here worth even looking at.

We left and called it a night at 1.30am. Pathetic, and easily the worst night out clubbing this year. Should have gone to Side bar to finish it off.

There wasn’t much intention to go dancing tonight. Me, Joe, Srey, Ashley, Mandy are just chatting in Shark Bar … one of the girls notices that there was a dancefloor in this place. It was on the otherside.. once the music gets louder, we decide to have a bit of a dance.

There were probably about 3 circles. Ourselves, the americans, and some other asians.

About Fridays @ Shark Bar / Hotel
Location: 127 Liverpool Street (Cnr Pitt Street) Sydney
Website: http://www.sharkhotel.com.au
Music: RNB.
Size: One small wooden floor to hold 100 ? A DJ booth in the corner with lights in the ceiling. Open access to the pool tables and chairs surrounding.

Timeline

Music
The DJ played entire songs without any mixing.. I could definitely tell the difference now. Some songs felt like going forever. The 1 – 2 seconds of silence between each song was a little awkward. The DJ’s at the proper RNB places cut it short and keep the crowd going. However, this *is* shark bar.. its not meant to be a club.

American Line Dancing
There were a group of african americans doing what they do, shaking their booty and line dancing. Wtf? It was quite a nice sight to see.. there were about 10 of them line dancing to the music. Eventually the whole dancefloor joined in and followed their steps. It was two steps right, two steps left, two back, one forward, turn and repeat. Hard to explain, harder to learn.

American grinder
I saw an old asian guy dancing on his own, he was having his crotch massaged up and down by one of the american girls who had a quite large rump. She was the paint roller and he was the wall. He simply stood there and she painted him. He was enjoying it, and gave me a little reminder of what I’d probably be upto when I’m 50.

Ourselves
We formed our circle and danced throughout.. not much neither could do to each other… Srey was off the hook again, she seems like absolute rnb fanatic as she knows every single word to every song. I would grind her right then and there if I could! Joe doing some great moves. I was doing my own little thing.
Coda
Girls left 1.30am ish, we boys left soon after. I thought Friday night would have been more dead, but it seemed like an okay night for some free dancing. Perhaps Pure @ skygardens would have been better (like we were bothered going)

I go out with Sue, Alisha, Tim, Dave to Havana nightclub. Tim and Sue just broke up and Tim wants back in... Sue and Alisha also get very drunk in the club. .. mayhem throughout..

Lead Up
Suzanne unofficially broke up with her boyfriend Tim. A night out at a gay bar or at the cross was put on the table. She was keen. She also invited Alisha, David, and Tim the now unofficial ex. None of my personal friends were eager to hang out with me at the cross with a bunch of people I didn’t really know. Up to this point in time, I only knew Suzanne and Alisha, for a combined total of 5 minutes. Hmm.. Here we go…

The only rejection I enjoyed
Space was the first choice as it was rnb with fellow wogs and aussies (it’s Saturday, not Friday) We got rejected at Space because Tim was wearing old trackpants and a jacket from the early nineties. Reminded me of my brothers fashion sense. (thought: I need to get my brother some proper jeans this week, that lazy sod.) Dave got pissed off and talked to me about it as Tim went to get jeans from a friends place nearby. I supported the idea of abandoning Tim. Sue told us that Tim was begging to be back with her every moment he could. Tim was only here tonight to get back with Sue.

Quickie at sharkies:
Me and Dave went into sharkies to piss and more importantly, to have a dance. There were only two girls on the floor, dancing on the sidelines next to their table. We went up and somehow half integrated with them into a circle. We made some small talk with our partners. It felt jilted, but it went ok. We left on a happy note, full of happy stuff.

Breaking up is the hardest part:
Walked out of sharkies back to sue. She was in the middle of an argument with Tim. She didn’t want to go back to him. Dave stepped in (he’s a big guy) and repeated to Tim what Sue had said. Tim didn’t get it. After threats back and forth, it culminated in Dave getting his shirt ripped, and Tim attempting to smash a bottle on his head but missing. Tim ran off and we didn’t see him again that night. Sue was upset and apologized to me for such a bad start to the night. I didn’t know what to say. Dave looked ok but the happy stuff had disippated.

We went down oxford st and some guy gave us free passes to Havana. So ends the biggest lead up to our main destination..

Havana nightclub:
The venue has been covered before for Friday nights so here are some essentials for Saturdays:
Cover charge: $15. Free before midnight with a free pass.
Crowd: aussies and wogs. Young. More guys than girls. Girls were good.
Music: house. Commercial.
Atmosphere: tonight was busy. Friendly crowd.

Experiences
Entry: It was much more packed than Friday nights. That’s for sure. Perhaps everyone here had scored a free pass off that guy on the street. I went to dance, while the girls bought drinks for themselves.

Girls don’t hook up with posers.
Me and Dave went to random girls. I would pull off a pose that always scared the girls. They would walk away or turn their shoulders to me. Cold. Oh well, that was fun while it lasted. Just needed to write this as a reminder not to use this technique on strangers.

Alcohol is good
It wasn’t long until the girls got drunk. Sue hooked up with a random named Aaron, also drunk. I spoke to an 18 year old guy. It was his birthday. Even he had two blonde bombshells by his side. Was I missing something? I was quite possibly the hottest guy that night! I’m an exotic asian from the far east. Please westerner, take me!! Oh well… I guess it’s about confidence and personality too, which I don’t have.

Music:
It was good. Enough said. Almost all the songs had me going until the end of our night. They only played a few commercial tracks, the rest was good house.

Alcohol is bad
I am sitting next to sue and alisha who are so drunk. Sue is crying about how aaron ditched her. I really didn’t say anything because 1, I had no advice, and 2, she was drunk and wouldn’t remember anyway. I took a break to the toilet. I came out 30 seconds later… There was a FIGHT!!

Fight!
That’s two fights in two attendances at Havana. It was Aaron punching it up someone! He was fighting some other guys, who tried to crack onto Sue while I was gone. Crazy. They kicked out everyone except Aaron, who sported a large cut to his knuckle. Sue and Alisha kept drinking. Really crazy. They were drunk but looked sober so were able to buy more drinks.

James Tran goes babysitting
I had to ask the bartenders to stop giving alcohol to the girls. I felt like a babysitter at this time instead of a dancer. I was, by now, constantly looking over from a distance they were ok and hadn’t gotten into another altercation with any of the guys they openly flirted with. I even had the crossed arms and shaking head as the drunken stupendour personified by two girls happened before my eyes.

Aaron left and the girls gave chase to follow out of the club… It was 4am. Suzanne thought she was superwoman and tried to fly down the stairs by leaning over and falling forwards. I wasn’t strong enough to carry suzanne off her legs, so I dragged her as her feet clopped the stairs. Aaron was next to her telling her that she didn’t take him seriously and wasn’t going to enter a relationship. She wasn’t listening. Meanwhile, each time she found her footing, instead of walking with me, she tried to jump and fly down the stairs again. Sympathetic Aaron finally helped me halfway and carried her down, his mouth still blabbering about suzanne not being serious.

Coda
We finally got outside. Crazy.

What happens when you try to walk two drunk girls down oxford st (Babysitting part 2):
- the girls run onto the road outside havana and nearly get hit by taxis.
- I ran to the median strip and gripped both girls tight as traffic rushes by, praying to any god out there that I don’t lose grip and let the dogs out.
- Suzanne randomly throws Alisha’s jumper in the air. It lands on top of a tall signpost. The drunk girls desperately try to jump and climb the pole. Hilarious.
- gay guy walks by. The girls break free and tell him how hot he is. I regrab and walk on.
- guy with pizza comes by. Suzanne is so hungry she reaches to get his pizza. I say “no!” and try to pull her arm back. She manages to rip half his pizza slice but my arm grab makes suzanne drop the pizza on the ground. She still wants to eat it. I had to stop sue from grabbing the pizza off the pavement. Big apology to the guy.
- another gay guy. More chaos until I can drag away.
- girls then start yelling out “JAMES IS THE COOLEST ASIAN EVER.. WOGS ARE SO HOT.” throughout.
- every remotely looking caucasian is asked if they are wogs or aussies. Either response is met with a “I HATE AUSSIES! WOGS ARE HOT!”
- Straight guy. Sue spills her story. He talks to her. Sue, then instantly declares “I’M GETTING SEX TONIGHT!”. The guy instantly lights up and sits her down. Maybe he can take both girls off me so I can go home. He leaves after she mentions the baby.
- I’m pretty much inserting a swear word in between every other word by now. The girls collapse and lie on the ground laughing. I groan, pull both up and the dragging continues. It’s a great look isn’t it – an asian guy dragging two white girls to who knows where..
- After a few more men, straight and gay, we finally reached our final guy before the station.. a police officer. “OMG A POLICE OFFICER!!”. They break loose and run towards him, hungry for something. The officer was withdrawing money from the ATM and almost thinks the girls are trying to rob him. The officer grabs his money and runs away. Girls chase and I have to grab and drag them back again…

Overall
Go if you’re bored on Saturday and just want house.

Another terrible tight ass night out clubbing at Pavillion and new Venue to the blog Sharkies (Shark Hotel)

After an expensive dinner at a Korean BBQ restaurant followed by heavy drinking, two of my high school friends Patrick and Mithilesh wanted some free clubbing action.

It was going to be a tight ass night (again)

I knew Pavillion was packed on Saturday nights so off we went.

~Midnight: Pavillion Hotel

A Quick Summary of Pavillion Saturday nights: I covered this in some earlier post so in summary, Pavillion Hotel means:
- rnb and hip hop with some pop songs
- free all night
- dark and packed
- mixed crowd of Aussies/Asians/Indians
- cheap alcohol

Once we got in, we went straight to the dancing. Ran into Kimberley, who I met through VSA (Yes, the same VSA group I met Kevin last night). She was here for her friends birthday. Pavilion must be a popular place for Vietnamese birthdays. Kimbo didn’t want a photo but I got a photo with the birthday girl. Dunno her name.

I don’t think we lasted long. It was a little too packed to do much attention grabbing dancing. Mithilesh didn’t like it so I chose Shark Bar next.

Why shark bar? Isn’t it so dodgy?
Yes, it is. But the dance floor is reasonable on Saturday. It’s enough to dance and mingle.

About Shark Hotel Saturday Nights:
Liverpool St. Same building as Space nightclub (which is located the level directly above). On entering you see lots of chairs. Then on the right theres lots of pool tables. The dancefloor takes a back seat in the rear. This place is more of a hangout place for people to chat and get cheap drinks. The dancefloor isn’t what people usually come here to do. Renowned to have some dodgy characters within.

Music: Rnb and Hip Hop

Crowd: Dominantly Asian. A mix of local Asians and fobby Asians. The exception being Mithilesh our resident Indian. There were some Indians there too of course.

Atmosphere: Dark except for the pool table area. Bustling is the best word to describe it as it’s a lot of people drinking and eating. The dancefloor has a few people dancing there .. you could get yourself a sizeable amount of dance space to spin around with a partner or practice line dancing with a group of people.

Experiences:
Music: The rest of our night was spent here. The DJ played the typical RnB tunes. He focused more on the hip hop side of things for most tracks, which was good. I am so over the love song shit.

How not to pick up a guy on the floor: There were two girls there whispering to their friends about me. I definitely could tell by the way they were staring and whispering/giggling. I’m not sure if this was out of not knowing what to do, or out of a dare, but two of the girls joined our group of 3 guys and sidelined danced. We opened and formed a circle. I gave the girl closest to me a cheer and they both RAN for the hills back to her friends. Maybe they were scared? I walked up to the group and straight to the girl in question. She ran away and said “no no no!” in a funny way. I guess it was a dare, and I rejoined our little circle.

Then I find myself alone. The two girls approach again. I ignore. The runaway girl accidentally bumps her butt into me. I turn around and she’s running away back to her friends again. Weird.

Fight! (Yes. Shark Bar. C’mon, it had to happen.)
We were dancing and suddenly this huge mob amassed in the middle, fists everywhere. We nearly got caught up and had to get away pretty quickly. The fight went nasty as the fighting contestants grabbed tables and chairs and threw it at each other. It was something out of Jerry Springer but Steve wasn’t there to stop it. The most vivid part was seeing one of the guys pick up a chair and throw it halfway across the room. The chair whacked the guy on the head and he fell on the floor. Ouch. That’s alcohol for ya.

Overanalysis of a girl
Well, after the fight, nobody went back on the dance floor. Some eventually went back, and so did I after the DJ played some Snoop Dogg. Suddenly a bunch of Indian guys who we ran into earlier came out again, and danced with me. We made a circle. These guys then moved the circle towards a girl who was dancing on her own. Now it was us and her.
The forced me to do a dance in the middle of their circle. (I really hate dancing in the middle of circles. I’m only an enthusiastic dancer, not a good one). I did some mini moves with the girl for about 10 seconds. I turned around and the whole Indian circle ditched me and were in a corner!! What ?? Did they purposely try to set me up with her? I’m looking at her and she’s smiling. Maybe it was a setup. Maybe im just thinking too much. I taught her some basic fun dance moves and got some kino with the salsa moves. It was only just me and her on the dance floor. She didn’t seem daunted at all about having nobody else on the floor. Mithi and Pat were urging me that they wanted to leave. I didn’t have time to take her off the floor and do the whole chit chat thing. Just before I asked for her details, some guy comes up and talks to her. Probably a friend. I introduce myself to him and ask how he knows her. He doesn’t. She asks us both how we know each other. We don’t. He’s just a random who wanted to pick up and didn’t realize that I was right in front of her dancing and holding her hands. Fuck. He didn’t even want to speak to friendly old me. Not a very nice way to cut kill a dancing session between two people. Motherfucker. About a minute later he’s holding her hands and dancing with her. What the fuck just happened. How appropriate would it be now to throw a chair at his head and smack it right at the penis protruding from his forehead.

I just walked up, gave her my business card and went off in a hurry before she probably started making out with the guy. She wasn’t going to call with the lame way I did it, but I’d be stabbing myself right now if I didn’t do it at all.

Lessons learned:
- Be wary of dance floors where loose objects are around. Your head may connect with one of them
- Dance with joy, young padawan, and girls butts will come in contact with you quickly, yet run away just as fast.
- If you have a girlfriend, prepare to fend off the guys who like to steal at Sharkies.

Summary:
Reasonable RnB places to dance if you like to dance for free. If you don’t like to dance.. why are you reading this blog? I would recommend pavilion for a free night out, but not Sharkies. If you are a bunch of horny men, I would go for Sharkies. You’d feel right at home.
